World Cholangiocarcinoma Day 2026

February 19, 2026, was marked by World Cholangiocarcinoma Day.

(CCA) – a global initiative to raise awareness of cholangiocarcinoma, a rare and often underestimated cancer with an increasing incidence worldwide.

On this occasion, I had the special honor of speaking at the Servier webinar for World CCA Day. The online event drew over 400 live participants. It was a great pleasure for me to discuss current developments and therapeutic perspectives in biliary carcinoma (BTC) and cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) together with Professor Dr. Nicola Normanno (Italy) and Professor Dr. Teresa Macarulla (Spain).

In my presentation, I emphasized that biliary carcinoma (BTC) is an umbrella term for several biologically and molecularly distinct subentities, each characterized by a specific molecular profile. Comprehensive molecular testing should therefore be performed early on, ideally before initiating systemic therapy. The results of molecular analysis are of central importance for the individualized treatment strategy, particularly with regard to the targeted use of molecularly targeted therapies in the second-line setting.

Precision oncology requires a precise molecular understanding.
